Intent-Driven Engineering Without the Bureaucracy


Enterprise rigor does not have to mean enterprise bureaucracy.


One of the most important ideas behind Intent-Driven Engineering is that the methodology defines a canonical destination, not a mandatory implementation for every engineering organization.


The complete model can include structured Intent artifacts, validation, versioning, an Intent Registry, lifecycle evidence, metrics, governance, semantic intelligence, and eventually autonomous background agents.


But you don’t need to build all of that before you can start.


A much lighter implementation is possible:


Define Intent → Validate → Plan → Implement → Verify → Produce Evidence


The Intent File remains the execution contract, with four essential elements:


Intent. Inputs. Outputs. Success Criteria.


From there, developers and AI coding tools can work locally. Evidence can be captured as the work progresses, while registries, metrics, intelligence, and governance can operate asynchronously where appropriate.


The principle is simple:


Intent drives execution. Evidence feeds the registry. Intelligence grows over time.


The goal isn’t to build the most impressive governance architecture.


The goal is to help humans and AI consistently deliver the right software, prove that it achieved the intended result, and give the enterprise evidence that AI-assisted engineering is actually creating value.
