The Next 5 Years of Software Engineering
I’ve been writing software for 30 years. It’s faster now. Easier. But not always better. Code is still fragile — full of bugs, hacks, and vulnerabilities.
With AI writing much of the boilerplate, the role of the engineer is shifting. What will matter?
Architecture over syntax → AI can generate code, but it can’t reason about tradeoffs, failure modes, or long-term maintainability.
Outcomes over output → Companies don’t pay for lines of code. They pay for working, reliable, and secure systems.
Curation over creation → The bottleneck is no longer writing, but validating, governing, and integrating.
Hybrid skills → Engineers who combine technical depth with product, compliance, and communication will thrive.
Renaissance mindset → We are not just coders anymore. We are system thinkers, orchestrators, and stewards of trust.
The question isn’t “Will AI replace us?” but rather: Are we ready to lead in an AI-powered world?
Maybe this is a renaissance. Maybe it’s a reset. Either way, the future belongs to those who can think beyond code.
