When the Numbers Don’t Add Up, but the Vision Still Does
There’s something that every entrepreneur learns the hard way: sometimes the math doesn’t make sense, but the mission still does.
This year, I poured time, energy, and around ten thousand dollars into my little company, Kendallsoft. I brought in about four thousand dollars in revenue — not exactly a great return, right? But here’s the truth: I’ve been in business for over twenty-five years. I’ve had years where I broke even, years where I made a little, and years like this one where the expenses outweighed the income.
And yet, I’m still here.
Because being an entrepreneur isn’t about the year’s bottom line — it’s about the long game. It’s about trying, failing, learning, and getting back up again. It’s about building ideas into something tangible, even if it’s just a T-shirt line, a song, or a prototype that gets one inch closer to the dream.
I’ve written over two hundred songs. Not one has been a hit yet. But you know what that tells me? I just need to write two hundred more. Because creativity, like entrepreneurship, isn’t measured in quick wins. It’s measured in persistence, in the willingness to keep showing up when the results don’t justify the effort — yet.
This year didn’t go the way I wanted financially. That’s okay. I learned what doesn’t work. I tested ideas. I built connections. I planted seeds. And I’ve still got my integrity — and that counts for a lot.
Next year, the plan changes. Less spending, more strategy. Less motion, more momentum. Because one thing’s certain — I’m not quitting. I’ve come too far, and I’ve learned too much, to stop just because the spreadsheet looks bad.
In the end, it’s not about making the IRS happy — it’s about making yourself proud that you stayed in the game.
